Private Investigator

Zeb recognized the rap on his office door as Kate's.

"Come in."

She began talking as she approached Zeb's desk.

"I heard you had coffee with Echo Skysong this morning."

"Not much chance at privacy when you're the sheriff," said Zeb.

"None, really."

"Did you get smoke signals?" asked Zeb.

Not being party to the inside joke between Rambler and the sheriff, Kate could only respond with a puzzled look.

"Word gets around pretty quickly," said Kate.

"Well, I guess it must."

"It does. I talked with three of Rambler's deputies. None of them think anybody on the Rez police force is in cahoots with Senator Russell," said Kate.

"I kind of figured that would be a dead end, but keep it on your radar," said Zeb.

"Will do. Jake and I have seventeen young women to talk to. They have all publicly stated that Sun Rey either physically or sexually forced himself on them. The word is that sometimes he plied them with alcohol, other times they claim he sneaked them roofies. On a few occasions he simply forced himself on them."

"Did they mention this to friends or family?"

"Yes."

"Anyone else? Anyone with any authority like a doctor, social work, psychologist?"

"I'm afraid not. No one has approached the authorities on the Rez, and certainly no one has approached our office, at least as far as I know."

"Do we have a Cosby situation on our hands?" asked Zeb.

"No one has shot off Cosby's genitalia yet, at least not that we've heard," replied Kate.

"I'm fairly certain that would have made the daytime talk show circuit," replied Zeb.

"The talk shows would have a heyday with that one," said Kate. "When you think about it, it's kind of odd someone hasn't sought physical revenge against him considering what he allegedly did."

"As law enforcement officials, we have to remind ourselves that allegedly isn't proof, and I don't find it amusing as a man to even think of having his private parts blown off," said Zeb. "It makes us all cringe."

"How do you think rape or even the thought of it makes women feel?"

"Point well taken," said Zeb. "Do any of the women seem like they might be particularly handy with a gun?"

"I'm sure most of them can shoot. They're all local women. Pretty good chance they've all hunted and can handle a gun to some degree or another. Are any of them expert markswomen? I can't say, but four of them have military backgrounds," said Kate.

"Start with them," said Zeb.

"That group includes Echo Skysong's cousin and best friend," said Kate.

"Sonja Trees?"

"Yes. How would you know that?"

"I hear things."

"Okay."

"Sonja has to be checked out, and since Echo has the training she does, she has to be ruled out too," said Zeb.

"You want to look into her alibi?" asked Kate.

"No. I might have a conflict of interest," replied Zeb.

"Having a cup of coffee at breakfast with her is hardly what I'd call a conflict of interest."

"It's a long story. I'll tell you about it later," replied Zeb.

"I can't wait," said Kate.

"I'll leave it to you to check on her alibi," said Zeb.
